You know, Rummy killed weapons programs too.

What could possibly go wrong?

Gates readies big cuts in weapons

Now, as the only Bush Cabinet member to remain under President Obama, (SecDef Robert) Gates is preparing the most far-reaching changes in the Pentagon's weapons portfolio since the end of the Cold War, according to aides.

Sure, because killing programs that employ actual Americans and provides our soldiers, sailors and airmen with the best equipment possible in a time of global instibility and economic collapse is a brilliant fucking idea.

Two defense officials who were not authorized to speak publicly said Gates will announce up to a half-dozen major weapons cancellations later this month. Candidates include a new Navy destroyer, the Air Force's F-22 fighter jet, and Army ground-combat vehicles, the officials said.

Holy shiite!  What, the "up-armored" HMMWV has been such a smashing fucking success that we don't need to think about follow-on ground combat vehicles that, you know, actually protect the soldiers inside them?

And hey, the current destroyer design is only, what, 40-years old?  How'd you like the be driving a car designed before the widespread deployment of vehicle air-conditioning?

But under the Obama regime, nothin's too good for our troopers.  Yes sir-ee!
More cuts are planned for later this year after a review that could lead to reductions in programs such as aircraft carriers and nuclear arms, the officials said.

Oh man, it just gets better and better.

As a former CIA director with strong Republican credentials, Gates is prepared to use his credibility to help Obama overcome the expected outcry from conservatives.

OK, someone explain to me Gates' "strong Republicn credentials".  Are his credentials as solid as, say, David Frum's?  Or Kathleen Parker's?  Yeah, some strong cred, that.

Oh, and Heaven forbid those mean-spirited conservaives have the temerity to complain about this.  FWIW, I don't think Dubya's former SecDef has nearly enough "cred" with conservatives (who are worth of claiming such title) to "overcome" much of anything.

But know knows?  After all, I'm sure Dave Frum is already on board.
