More Economy FAIL!

Hey, remember last week?  All those reports about those rosy figures on unemployment and the economy?  And every O-bot, Democrat and member of the MSM (but I repeat myself, of course) screaming to the high heaven how "The Recession is Over" and the Teleprompter Messiah has saved us?

And all the folks at CNBC buying into the "Green Shoots" jive with even more vigor.

Yeah, good times, those.  Good... Times...

The number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly last week and retail sales disappointed in July. The latest government reports reinforced concerns about how quickly consumers will be able to contribute to a broad economic recovery.

So, how does Mr. Post-Partisan handle a little political opposition?

Why, by sending-in those famously restrained practitioners of reasoned debate - the Unions.

Ah, the spontaneity of it all.  Chicago deep-dish style, of course.

Way to go, Mr. Post-Racial

So the President of the United States, in his latest televised prime-time intrusion into our lives, was offered the perfect opportunity to show to us what life in a post-racial America would be like.  He was, as we all know by know, offered the opportunity to comment on the case of "Skip" Gates, as he's known by His Teleprompterness.

Now, he could have said something along the lines of "You know, it's unfortunate, but let's wait for all the facts to come out and be calm and keep Hope alive blah blah blah" and, you know, actually shown that he is capable of being the racial-healer and Light-Worker he was sold to us as.

Instead, he took the opportunity to demonstrate his ignorance of the facts of the case and to publicly bitch-slap the Police Department of the City of Cambridge, MA.

Obviously this is evidence of that first-class temperament the idiot-cons were claiming we were going to see on display daily were we smart enough to listen to them and elect this inexperienced Chicago machine-pol to the highest elected office in the Land.

Brilliant, indeed.

The lessons of history.

They have a way of - how is it put? - repeating themselves.

Nearing the end of my read of "The Forgotten Man" I can only marvel at the sense of Deja Vu I have these days.

Oh, and President HooBama?  I am so stealing that!

OT: Reading Denninger is, by far, the best economics course you're ever going to get, anywhere, anytime.  And it's free.

Somewhere, Dick Cheney is laughing.

Well, they said if I voted for McMaverick that I'd end-up with a President who would hold detainees indefinitely.  Looks like "they" were right!

The Obama administration said Tuesday it could continue to imprison non-U.S. citizens indefinitely even if they have been acquitted of terrorism charges by a U.S. military commission.

Pity that I can't hear The Dark Lord's laughter over the sound of all those lefty heads exploding all across Cambridge and San Francisco.

So moonbats, when are you going to fire-up your rent-a-mob protest machines over this latest OUTRAGETM?

No Nukes!

Because Barry sez so.  Oh Joy - release the Unicorns!

To which, I can't do better than Blazer in reply...

Obama will see himself as a worldly uber-intellectual who will enlighten the Russians and will thaw the tensions that have arisen during the Bush years.

The Russians will take one look across the room at the empty suit with the smirk on his face and realize they are negotiating with an utter fool.

Except to add the observation that The Unicorn Prince does seem to have no trouble whatever in kissing-up to leftist thugs.

Pretty soon, the Real Vice President of Genius is going to need his own "idiot" category.

Yep, we really dodged a bullet with that Palin chick.

Remain calm. All is well.

Hmmm - interest rates rising when there's no recovery in sight.  What could possibly go wrong?

Rates on the 30-year T-bill are up some 90% (4.67%) over their lows of 7-months ago (2.5%).  At a time when unemployment is ramping up and predictions of economic recovery are being backed out into 2010.

But I'm sure it will all and well.

Because we have a cool new President - with great pecs.

H/T streetwise.

The Nuclear Debt Bomb

Here comes the VAT.

Normally Paul Krugman, the liberal pundit and Nobel laureate in economics, and Paul Ryan, a conservative Republican congressman from Wisconsin, share little in common except their first names and a scorching passion for views they champion from opposite political poles. So when the two combatants agree on a fundamental threat to the U.S. economy, Americans should heed this alarm as the real thing. What's worrying both Krugman and Ryan is the rapid increase in the federal debt - ... the huge structural deficits that, under all projections, keep building the burden far into the future to unsustainable, ruinous heights.

And both agree that there is one - and only one answer for that - the Value Added Tax, or VAT.

Cheap at twice the price!

The Unicorn Prince - sprinkling a little Spendulus magic...

President Barack Obama is promising to deliver more than 600,000 jobs through his $787 billion stimulus plan this summer, repackaging a pledge the administration made weeks earlier as the economy continues to lose hundreds of thousands of jobs each month.

Well, running the numbers that comes out to approximately $1.3M per job.

Yep - that's wise use of Other Peoples' Money, there.
Obama's promise to create large numbers of jobs - a vow that Vice President Joe Biden made last month - quickly drew criticism from oponents and economists who have argued his stimulus plan thus far hasn't delivered.

"I think these estimates are overly optimistic," said Arpitha Bykere, a senior analyst with RGE Monitor.

Bykere said it likely will be later this year before any meaningful job creation occurs from stimulus spending.

How dare they question The Unicorn Prince!  Off the the re-education camps with them!  Poste Haste!!

And once again, reality.

Can't wait to see the Reality Based CommunityTM start to madly spin this:

The U.S. economy's recovery may have stalled after data on Wednesday showed half a million private sector jobs were lost in May and mortgage applications fell last week as rising interest rates frightened away buyers.

The only news to me here was that the so-called recovery had allegedly ever started - which one would think is a prerequisite for stalling.
One ray of hope though came from another report showing planned layoffs at U.S. firms fell for a fourth consecutive month in May, reaching the lowest level in eight months.

Well, hate to cloud-up that ray of hope, but once you've laid-off everyone the pace of lay-offs tends to slow to almost zero.

But remember, Bush was the Nazi

Who needs the 1st Amendment when you have Hope'n'Change instead?

A new White House policy on permissible lobbying on economic recovery and stimulus project has taken a decidedly anti-First Amendment turn. It's a classic illustration of Big Government trying to control every aspect of a particular activity and in the process running up against civil liberty.

Check out this passage from a post on the White House blog by Norm Eisen, Special Counsel to the President on Ethics and Government Reform (emphasis added):

"First, we will expand the restriction on oral communications to cover all persons, not just federally registered lobbyists. For the first time, we will reach contacts not only by registered lobbyists but also by unregistered ones, as well as anyone else exerting influence on the process. We concluded this was necessary under the unique circumstances of the stimulus program.

Ah, the incredibly elastic concept of "unique circumstances" being used to justify the stifling of free speech.

Politics, Chicago-deep-dish style.

Or, put differently, "How dare you petition the government!"

Thanks a flipping ton, 52%.

Everything is going according to plan.

Except that I thought the plan was to, erm, avoid bankruptcy.

General Motors Corp. has cleared a couple of key roadblocks on the ailing automaker's route to an almost certain bankruptcy filing Monday.

So, what again was the purpose of pouring 10's of billions of Obamadollars into GM and Chrysler if they were both going to end up bankrupt anyway?

Oh, that's right - it was to make sure the bankruptcy would end-up accruing to the benefit of Zero's political allies.  Silly me - I forgot about The Plan, again.

The country is in the very best of hands.

Well, if reality isn't going your way...

... then I suppose you can just make shit up.

You have to see this to believe it, and even then you'll have a hard time believing it. It's the Obama administration's deficit reduction program, otherwise known as "change the accounting." ...

Shazam! The government just made about $175 billion in deficits disappear (March's reported $956.8 billion compared to April's $781.4 billion through March).

Damn, The Unicorn Prince really is a miracle worker!

Well, not really.

Hey, here's a thought...

Let's continue to hold some of these unlawful combatant scum indefinitely.  Yeah, that's the ticket.

You know, if I didn't know better I would suggest that Senator HopeyChangey was simply demagoging the issue during the campaign to score some cheap political points against Chimpy McBushitlerBurton and suck-up to the moonbats.

But that would never happen.  Would it?

Yeah, it's mostly a rhetorical question - but...

... if the President of the United States were actually trying to destroy the economy of the country - for whatever reason or none at all - what, precisely, would he be doing differently?

Seriously.

Yay! We OFFICIALLY have a kleptocracy now.

So, let's recap, in a nut shell, what just happened here.

The President of the United States - acting in his capacity as self-appointed ruler of the fucking planet, I suppose - publicly negotiated the bankruptcy of an ostensibly private company (Chrysler) in such a way that the principal benefactors would be - surprise! - huge contributors to the campaigns of he and his political allies.

The negotiated settlement also screwed-over senior (and allegedly secured) bondholders, who will end-up with the table scraps left by the politically preferred, but junior and unsecured, debt holders.

And all of this was just blessed by a Federal Bankruptcy Judge - a 1995 appointee of Bill Clinton, of course.

As Ace asks...

... "How's that new era of transparency working out for you?"

Barack Obama's top man in the intelligence community sent the President a memo defending the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, which the White House edited before releasing to the press de-emphasizing that defense.

We've always been at war with East Asia, it seems.
