I have a man-crush on Mark Steyn

Below the fold is an excerpt from a recent lecture, given by Mark Steyn at Hillsdale College in New Hampshire - the full text is here.

It is, truth be told, a rather stunning read.  Even by the already high standards for such things that people like me have for Steyn's work.  It's also quite chilling given the context he lays out for our current political climate and our all-too-certain near- and long-term futures.

It will take you a couple of minutes - but seriously, it's well worth the time.

As he's the reason this landed in my inbox, many thanks are owed to Mike Franco - who, in retrospect, I really wish had been elected Chairman of the Massachusetts GOP.  Had that happened, chances are I might be sticking with the Republican Party a little bit longer.  Alas, and alack...

You want to know why I think the Democrat Party is the party of the intentionally stupid?

Well here's just one example - the same people who seem to think that waterboarding jihadis in effort to extract information that could save the lives of Americans is a Crime Against Humanity^TM are also willing to fight hammer-and-tongs to preserve the practice of infanticide (in the guize of Partial Birth Abortion).

So they're not willing to make a couple of Islamoterrorists uncomfortable for a few minutes but they are willing the suck the brain out of a living baby in order to not invonvenience his mother.

To square that circle you have to be either 1) intentionally stupid, or 2) a monster.

I'm being charitible by assuming the former.

In exchange for votes to pass a controversial global warming package, Democratic leaders are offering some lawmakers generous emission “allowances” to protect their districts from the economic pain of pollution restrictions.

People like Henry "Pig-Face" Waxman picking the winners and losers in the economy.  What could possibly go wrong?

President Barack Obama said Tuesday the United States lost "our moral bearings" with gruesome terror-suspect interrogations and he left the door open to prosecuting Bush administration officials who vouched for their legality.

Shocker: TARP may not be working as advertised.

Show of hands - who didn't see this coming?

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Treasury Department data, the biggest recipients of taxpayer aid made or refinanced 23% less in new loans in February, the latest available data, than in October, the month the Treasury kicked off the Troubled Asset Relief Program.

Well, duh?  Of course they made less loans.  That's because they're - wait for it - BROKE!  And they're using TARP money to try to hide their looming (if not already de facto present) bankruptcy.

A cynic would claim that was a feature - rather than a bug - of the Obambi, Dubya, Geithner, Paulson bank balance sheet rescue program.

Note to Hollywood, not only is this the right thing to do, it's awesome advertising. Let's face it, this film didn't need any free publicity, any extra buzz to score a huge opening weekend. Abrams and crew clearly did it because it was the right thing. Good for them.

Dissent is Hate Speech, Part Infinity-minus-one.

Robert Stacy McCain has the run down on the apoplectic reaction of liberals to the "tea parties" sweeping the country. His post appropriately is titled "WTF" based on this hyperventilation (via Instapundit) by someone who apparently only watches MSNBC:

President Obama was elected democratically, according to the doctrines set forth by the Founding Fathers. The Tea Party movement represents a real danger to the tenets of democracy Americans have embraced for centuries.

The editors of the San Francisco Examiner (I thought it was out of business, no?) put this fearful title on an otherwise reasonable article explaining how the liberal bias of the mainstream media has blinded them to the tea party phenomenon: Tea parties are flash crowds Obama should fear. One commenter, who apparently read the headline but not the article, commented: "Many of those signing on to these tea parties are from the militia movement groups. They are scary and potentially violent."

Got that?  Dissent is now "scary and potentially violent."  When not practiced by people like Code Pinko and International ANSWER, that is.

Well, we now understand why Obama kept-on SecDef Gates.

So that when the Ayers-worshiper went about dismantling the US Armed Forces he could put a nominally Republican Face^TM on the process.

Gates announced a broad range of cuts Monday to weapons spending, saying he plans to cut programs ranging from a new helicopter for the president to ending production of the $140 billion F-22 fighter jet. The Army's modernization program would be scaled back, while a new satellite system and a search-and-rescue helicopter would be cut.

Sure, because Heaven Forbid we modernize the Army in a time of asymmetrical warfare.

What could possibly go wrong?

The good news?  These cuts will all bring howls of protest from Congress and are not likely to see the light of day.

The bad news?  That they would be proposed in the first place, of course.

Selective Outrage^TM strikes again.

The Obama administration is engineering its new bailout initiatives in a way that it believes will allow firms benefiting from the programs to avoid restrictions imposed by Congress, including limits on lavish executive pay, according to government officials.

Administration officials have concluded that this approach is vital for persuading firms to participate in programs funded by the $700 billion financial rescue package.

In other words, now that Zero needs the Fat Cats' money to make the "toxic asset bailout" plan work, he's going to try to punch holes in the very laws he demanded in the first place when he was "shaking with outrage" once the "outrageous" bonuses at AIG were "disclosed".

Awesome.
